AKHAL-TEKE BREEDERS OF
SOUTH AFRICA

We have always admired the Akhal-Teke breed from afar but never dreamed that we would one day actually own Akhal-Teke horses, let alone become Akhal-Teke Horse Breeders. Thoughts of golden, shining horses, athletic in nature and with beautiful lines kept us wondering if the dream could become reality. There are fewer than 5000 Akhal-Teke horses around the world, with the majority in Turkmenistan and Russia.

Inspired by a Go-Fund me campaign to assist Akhal-Teke horses in the war-torn areas of Ukraine, we contacted the Akhal-Teke Foundation in the USA to see if we could buy Akhal-Teke horses from the Ukraine and import them to South Africa to start an Akhal-Teke breeding programme for these endangered horses in Africa.

The Akhal-Teke Foundation contacted horse breeders in the Ukraine who needed to raise money to care for horses that could not be moved. We purchased three horses from Ukraine. However, it soon became clear that we would need a wider genetic pool in order to successfully breed with the Akhal-Teke horses in Africa. We initially imported four Akhal-Teke horses from Russia and then later another two from Russia. The one Ukrainian mare was inseminated with semen from a German Akhal-Teke stallion while in quarantine in Holland. This foal would be the first Akhal-Teke horse born in South Africa.

All our horses are registered with the official Akhal-Teke stud book in Russia. We work closely with international judges to develop the breed and aim to assist in having local judges trained to inspect the horses. We believe in competing our horses to showcase their athleticism and to expose the public to the Akhal-Teke breed as a whole. It is only through publicity that the Akhal-Teke breed can be brought back from its endangered status.
